Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that occurs due to bacterial biofilms (plaque) and is also the first reversible stage of periodontal disease. Thanks to premature treatment and by means of a correct and adequate oral hygiene, it is possible to lead to a remission of gingivitis and a complete cure of it. However, if we left this disease untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis and posterior possible tooth loss.

Gingivitis has nonspecific symptoms and manifests itself mainly from an inflammation in the form of swollen and reddish gums with purple tints (depending on the severity of the case), soft consistency, sensitivity, bleeding and pain to the touch.

Causes of gingivitis.

Anyone can get gingivitis by not carrying out proper oral hygiene, but, in the same way, there are other risk factors that can cause this disease, such as:

  • Smoking.
  • Old age.
  • Low vitamin C diet.
  • Dental intervention that makes it difficult to properly clean the teeth.
  • Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy or menstruation.
  • Genetic factors.
  • Certain drugs.
  • Certain diseases that weaken the immune system (HIV, leukaemia).

Treatment of gingivitis

The treatment for gingivitis in adults includes a professional dental cleaning and further indications in relation to hygiene that the patient must follow. In advanced and severe cases, a prescription for antibiotics or surgery may be required.

ID Dent offers a surgical procedure such as Gingvinoplasty, which is gum surgery that rebuilds and reshapes the healthy gum tissue around the teeth. It can be performed both for the treatment of various diseases and for aesthetic purposes.
